School Dinners

School dinners have had a quite a lot of bad press over the years and you'll probably remember them being quite unpleasant from your own school days. However, in recent years there has been a national overhaul of school dinners and efforts have been made to make them healthier and more nutritionally balanced.

School kitchens will now have strict instructions on the type of food they're able to produce and the sort of ingredients they can use. Excessive levels of saturated fat and salt must be avoided and there is a great deal of focus on providing a variety of different foods with a good mix of fruit an vegetables. Unhealthy favourites such as chips will be limited to one serving per week.

Weaning children off the unhealthy diets they had become accustomed to provide difficult for some schools at first, however in the majority of cases schools and their pupils have adapted very well to the changes.

The changes in the menu have also been reflected in the classroom and schools with kitchens and the appropriate facilities for teaching home economics have been ensuring that their children are learning how to cook healthy food for themselves. The reasoning behind this is that if they know and understand why it is important to eat healthily and know how to prepare the food then they are more likely to want to eat it as opposed to the junk food that was previously served up in school canteens on a regular basis.
